If you are homeless and have a disability check or other small check and you wish you could get out of San Diego County and go live someplace cheaper but haven't left because you believe it would cost too much to travel elsewhere, then here is your route out:
RTA route 202 Oceanside transit center to Murrieta Walmart. $3.
RTA route 206 Murrieta Walmart to Corona. $3.
RTA route 1 Corona to Riverside. $1.50
OmniTrans 215 Riverside to San Bernardino. $1.75.
VVTA route 15 San Bernardino to Victorville. $6.
The RTA 202 and 206 at the beginning and the VVTA 15 at the end are all commuter routes with limited service and at least some of these routes are M-F only. To have any hope of doing this in one day, you would need to leave very early. (I actually walked to Murrieta and spent the night in Corona, so I am not sure what it would look like to try to do this in one day.)
Bring cash and exact change. If you have a disability card for the San Diego transit system or qualify for senior fare, they should honor that. That would get the cost down further.
I have provided all the links so you can check schedules and other details yourself. Please note that fares sometimes go up and this website doesn't get updated all that often, so do check everything before you go.
It is also possible to get to the Central Valley for not much money, if you wish to. I walked from Victorville to Lancaster (and then caught a ride to Mojave). I am not immediately finding a bus route from Victorville to Lancaster, and, at the moment, I face possible starvation in a new city where I don't know where the soup kitchens are, so I don't plan on spending more time on this post. But if you can get to Lancaster, you can take Kern Transit 100 from there to Bakersfield for not much money (I paid $2 from Mojave to Bakersfield -- it may be a bit more if you get on it in Lancaster).
The High Desert and Central Valley are both tons cheaper than anything I ever saw anywhere in San Diego County. Once you get to Bakersfield, Kern Transit can take you to other small cities in the area for not much money. There is also a Greyhound station and Amtrak station in walking distance of the transit center if you wish to continue on to someplace further north.
Do your own research of course. But if you want out of San Diego County and haven't left yet because you think you can't afford bus fare, this is substantially cheaper than Greyhound fares, which seem to start at about $35.50 for Oceanside to Victorville and go up from there.
